Sushila Birla Girls’ School conducted a Winter Welfare Drive on 15th and 16th November as part of its ongoing social outreach efforts, led by SNEH – the social service unit of the school.
In school, students played an active role throughout the preparation process. They motivated and persuaded parents across classes to contribute only clean, good-quality woollens, blankets, utensils and other useful household essentials. They then took responsibility for sorting, folding, checking, labelling and packing each item carefully so that it would be easy to distribute and immediately usable. Through this, students experienced the joy of giving as a learned skill that requires empathy, communication, responsibility and ownership.
The three teachers, Ms Rubena Chatterjee, Ms Rita Saha and Ms Madhumita Dasgupta boarded the train to Purulia on 14th November. On 15th November, they went to Silingda, a remote village in the Purulia district of West Bengal, where all donated items were distributed among the 100 families living there. They also visited Vidyasagar Sishu Sikshya Niketan, Jadugora, to extend support to the children studying there. To strengthen learning facilities, 10 chairs, 100 new blankets and two computers were additionally donated to the school.
The drive reinforced that meaningful social service combines planning, relevance, teamwork and consistent community connection.

Grocery and food items were distributed amongst all 80 families in the village. They also went to Vidyasagar Sishu Sikshya Niketan, Jadugora, to spread awareness on issues like menstrual hygiene and good touch-bad touch. A fun activity was conducted on art and craft with the little ones from the school. Prizes like mugs, stationery, hoodies and bags were given as a token of appreciation. Donation of blankets, bedsheets, groceries, stationery and sanitary napkins was also done for the 250 children residing in the school.

The following day witnessed a journey to another remote village — Jiling Sereng in the Purulia district. Groceries and food items were distributed among the 85 families residing in the village. Students also visited a hospital set up by the Rotary Club of Purulia for insightful knowledge about the daily procedures.
The trip encouraged teamwork, discipline, a sense of curiosity and served as a reminder to be grateful for all that one has.
Five students from Class XI and the two school counsellors participated in a rural outreach programme titled ‘Books are Bridges’ which was organised by Pukaar, an NGO. The students and teachers went to hand over an almirah full of books to Thakurnagar Nanda Mahila Vidyapith, a school in Purba Medinipur. The team from SBGS spent some time with the students of the school in Purba Medinipur and engaged in a few bonding activities like making a tree of friendship with thumb prints, playing dumb charades and singing songs together. The students of SBGS also organised games for the students there and gave away goody bags containing assorted products to the winners. This was an enriching experience for the students and teachers alike.
On 6th December 2023, 4 students and 3 teachers from Sushila Birla Girls’ School embarked on a mission to Jiling Sereng, a village in Purulia. The primary aim of the visit was to distribute warm clothes and blankets among the 100 underprivileged families residing in the village. This initiative was a part of a larger effort by the school to support those in need and contribute to enhancing the quality of their life thereby fostering a culture of philanthropy and team work in the students. Indu Prabha of Class XI H said, “It was wonderful to see the radiant faces of the inmates on receiving the clothes and blankets from us.”
A targeted donation drive was organized in the school, encouraging students and members of staff to contribute gently-used clothing items. Donated items were meticulously sorted to ensure quality and appropriateness. They were then packaged into bundles, considering factors such as age and gender to meet the diverse needs of the community.
