International Chess Day

The students of the Chess Activity Club of the Primary Section of Sushila Birla Girls’ School celebrated International Chess Day on Tuesday, 20th July. On this day, an interactive session with Woman Grandmaster Ms. Mary Ann Gomes was organised for the students.

Ms. Mary Ann Gomes, an Indian chess player from Kolkata, has been awarded the title of Woman Grandmaster (WGM) by FIDE in 2008. She has won many International Chess Championships such as the Girls Under 10 title at the 1999 Asian Youth Chess Championships, the Asian Under 16 Girls Championship in Uzbekistan in 2005, the Asian Junior (Under 20) Girls Championship in 2006, 2007 and 2008, the Women's Indian Chess Championship in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and many more.

An Intra Club Chess tournament, a quiz competition as well as a poster making activity had been conducted in the preceding weeks to add to the celebration.

Ms. Gomes spoke to the students about her childhood experience as a chess player. She also taught them some interesting tricks about the game. She emphasised upon the importance of concentration, strategic thinking and mental discipline in the life of a sportsperson. Students elicited important tips from the guest during the interaction round. The session was indeed very informative and inspiring for our students.
